Chairman of the Bar Council Visit

On 20 February 2017 Devon Chambers hosted a visit from the Chairman of the Bar Council, Andrew Langdon QC, together with the Vice-Chairman, Andrew Walker QC and the Head of Governance Natalie Zara. Andrew was able to give local practitioners an up-to-date appraisal of the work that the Bar Council is doing on behalf of the profession in negotiations with the government on various matters, including the proposed amendment to the Advocates' Graduated Fee Scheme and changes to fixed costs in the civil jurisdiction. It was encouraging to see Andrew bringing to his new position those qualities which served us all so well when he was leader of the Western Circuit.

Devon Chambers' Criminal Seminar

Devon Chambers' Criminal Team held a highly informative seminar on Tuesday 6th December at Jury's Inn, Exeter Street, Plymouth. Our guest speaker Emma Wilson from Prometheus Forensic Services dispelled a few myths including those surrounding spontaneous combustion and fires destroying evidence. This was followed by delegates enjoying some festive fare and a glass of wine. Jo Martin then gave a talk on child cruelty and domestic violence cases from both the criminal and family courts perspective which proved of interest to both criminal and family practitioners in attendance. The evening was rounded up by Piers Norsworthy who gave a clear and concise talk on the new approach to vulnerable witnesses, citing that training will take place in the New Year for all criminal defence practitioners on the Western Circuit. Jason Beal, Jo Martin and Piers Norsworthy have been trained as Facilitators/Trainers and will be responsible for delivering training in this important new area.

A copy of the handout can be found on our Resources page under Recent Seminars.

Devon Chambers attends University of Exeter Law Careers Fair

On Wednesday 16th November 2016 representatives from Devon Chambers attended the annual Law Careers Fair at the University of Exeter. We were able to speak to students from the university interested in a career at the Bar about pupillage, the BPTC, mini-pupillage opportunities and life at the Bar.

Chambers sees events such as this as a fantastic chance for students in the area to meet with the local Bar, to have their questions answered and to ensure the continued healthy growth of the profession.
